|Has Motif=Deception; Deceitful woman; Gullible husband; Fish; Food and drink; Humiliation; Evidence; Impossible conditions; Judgement; Revenge; Violence; Imprisonment
|Has Summary=This story appears within the frame of Ingenia 1 in the Reworking/Metaphrasis version of the Greek Syntipas. The lady asks the man who has collected the Wiles of Women whether he has ever heard of such a tale, and as he has not, she relates the following:

A misogynist man with a faithful and sensible wife spends all his time railing against the wickedness of women. His wife asks for moderation, asking him to criticize only those women whose actions deserve such condemnation, but the husband replies that all women are the same. She retorts that he should not say that, given that he has never met a bad woman in his life. He replies that if he were to meet a bad woman, he would cut off her nose. The wife decides that she must teach him a lesson.

One day, the husband instructs his wife to cook him some food for the midday meal, and to bring it to him when he out working in the fields. That morning, she goes out and buys some fish (mullet) from a roadside market, then returns home to cook - but does not cook the mullet. She instead prepares a meal of other dishes, and takes the food to her husband in the fields, secretly carrying the mullet as she does. On her way home, she scatters the fish across the ploughed fields. When her husband returns to the house later in the evening, he sees finds the fish all over the ground. He picks them up and takes them home. When he realises that his wife has not yet cooked supper, he gives her the fish, and orders her to cook them. The wife sets to cooking, but when the meal is ready, it is not fish. The husband demands to know what happened to the fish he brought home, but his wife pretends not to know what he is talking about. He explains that he means the fish he found lying in the field, and she gathers the all the neighbours together to witness his foolishness. He continues to insist that he found fish in the fields, but of course the neighbours think this sounds ridiculous. They believe his wife when she says he must be possessed by an evil spirit, so they tie him up so that he cannot harm anyone. He remains stubborn for three days, after which he gives in, begging for forgiveness. When his wife asks him about the fish, he pretends not to know what she is talking about. She then releases him from his bonds. She finally reveals her trick, explaining that he was right all along, but that she did this to teach him not to boast about being superior to women.

(While listening to the lady relate this story, the man had let his guard down, and drifted closer to the woman - she then shouts, and calls in the guards, as usually happens in the Ingenia narrative.)

From Nishimura's summary of the Reworking/Metaphrasis version of the Greek Syntipas.
|Has Note=This story is obviously closely related to the other "Wiles of Women" stories, which are: Ingenia 1, The Trick: The Wiles of Women Collection, in which this story is embedded, which tells of a man who tries (and fails) to record examples of all of women's trickery; Ingenia 2, The Trick: Hidden Under the Throne, in which a queen challenges a merchant who aids adulterous women to demonstrate his capacity for deceit, then outdoes him; and Ingenia 4: The Fur Coat, in which a woman challenges her husband's misogynist scribe, who writes about women's wiles, into testing her capacity for creative adultery.

{{Version
|Has Description=The Book of Sindbad the Philosopher, rendered Syntipas in Greek, was translated into learned Byzantine Greek in the late 11th century by Michael Andreopoulos in eastern Asia Minor. Andreopoulos states that he translated the text from the Syriac version, which he claims was a translation of the 9th-century Arabic translation of a Persian original. In the 13th century, Andreopoulos’ text was rewritten in a slightly less ‘elevated’ linguistic register, termed ‘Retractatio’ or Metaphrasis<nowiki/>' in scholarship. From the late 16th century onwards translations into 'lower' linguistic registers begin to appear; these are known as the 'Vernacular' or Post-Byzantine' versions of the text. The Greek Syntipas has come down to us in 25 manuscripts, as well as in numerous chapbooks printed in Venice and Athens (for which see Kechayoglou 2024). The oldest known print dates to 1712 or 1713 (printed in Venice by Bortoli); the oldest surviving print dates to 1744 (Bortoli). Reprints continued to be made well into the 20th century.

The metaphrasis is a rather faithful ‘rewording’ of Andreopoulos’ translation. The two versions offer largely the same text, though the metaphrasis has one extra story that seems to be unique to it (Fish in the field), as it does not appear in Andreopoulos or any of the eastern text traditions of Sindbad. The story is embedded in another story and is told not by one of the counsellors or the stepmother, but by one of the protagonists in the 7th counsellor’s story. The metaphrasis also changes the storyline of one of the stories (Mel) to an ostensibly more plausible one. (In Andreopoulos’ version, the escalating violence over the honeycomb begins with a bee that is attracted to the honey, killed by the merchant's cat, who is then killed by the hunter's dog. The translator responsible for the metaphrasis omits the cat and introduces a woman from the merchant’s village, who claims the hunter stole the beehive from her village and tries to grab it. The dog then barks at the woman, the hunter and the merchant start to fight, and the inhabitants of the two villages join in and they all kill each other. In this version, the bee’s presence is pointless. Some of the post-Byzantine versions try to make sense of the role of the bee by making the woman say that the bee was from her village and recognised provenance of the stolen honey.) These and other minor differences can help to determine which unseen or understudied manuscripts belong to which tradition.

The post-Byzantine versions of the 16th and 17th centuries are based on the Metaphrasis, not on the original Andreopoulos text. They do not go back to one translation but differ considerably in terms of language and expression.

While several studies and editions of the Syntipas narrative exist, the editions need updating. For example, an examination of the manuscripts of the Andreopoulos version to which Jernstedt did not have access at the time is necessary: at least one of them often offers better readings (Vind. phil. gr. 173; see Hinterberger 2023) than the three manuscripts used by Jernstedt. The same holds true for the manuscripts of the Metaphrasis, for which no fewer than seven have not yet been properly collated and studied. Moreover, there are likely to be other manuscripts containing the text, especially in the Greek Library of Parliament and the Athos monasteries, for which the catalogues are often inadequate. Occasionally, there is confusion between the Book of Syntipas and the collection of fables attributed to Syntipas (e.g. in Dresd. gr. Da. 33), as well as between Syntipas and Stephanites and Ichnelates. For instance, in the manuscript Jerusalem Patriarchal Library Ms. 208, Syntipas appears after the text of Stephanites and Ichnelates but is not mentioned in the library catalogue. The same holds true for a large excerpt of Syntipas in another known manuscript, Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Cod. gr. 525. It is therefore likely that there are more such cases, and it would be worth examining manuscripts that contain the texts frequently found alongside Syntipas, such as Stephanites and Ichnelates, the collection of fables attributed to Syntipas, and the Life of Aesop.

|Has Summary=The Blind Old Man; or, The Merchant and the Rogues

A young man inherits a great fortune, and sails away to distant lands to trade, where he is tricked by three rogues. The first rogue convinces him that the precious sandalwood (or aloe wood) he has purchased is actually worthless by burning a bit of it in the privy; he offers to replace the youth's stock of it with anything he desires. The second rogue beats the youth at dice, after wagering that the loser will drink all the waters in the sea. The third rogue, one-eyed, claimed that the youth (whose eyes looked like the rogue's) had stolen his eye, and must stand trial. The youth, tricked at every turn, despairs, but an old woman tells him where to find the wise blind man who counsels all the rogues in the city. The youth sneaks near to the blind man, and overhears the first rogue tell his story about tricking the dupe into believing his sandalwood was worthless. The old man says his promise to fill the young man's cart with anything he desires in exchange for the wood was foolish - what if the youth asks for his cart to be filled with fleas, half male and half female? The rogue protests that the young man won't be shrewd enough to say this. The second rogue tells his story, and the old man tells him that he, too, has done badly - what if the youth says that he WILL drink all the water in the sea, but not a drop more, and insists that the rogue must dam up all the rivers that flow into the sea before he begins drinking? The second rogue also protests that the youth will not be that clever. The third rogue tells his story, and the old man cautions him - what if the youth says, 'Take out your eye, I'll take out mine, we'll weigh them to see if they are equal'? The youth sneaks away, and does exactly as the wise blind man had said, offering each of the rogues an impossible challenge, which they are of course unable to meet, and so he keeps his wealth, health, and freedom.
Three business partners are on a trading trip together, bringing with them great wealth. They come to stay with an old woman to whom they entust their riches for safe keeping. In order that none of them should cheat the others, they instruct the old woman not to return their treasure to any one of them alone, but only to the three of them together, to which she agrees. The three men go to bathe in a pool behind the house, but have forgotten a comb; of the three offers to ask to borrow a comb from the old woman. He approaches her, and instead asks her to give him all their gold, saying they wish to count it. She replies that she swore not to give it to any one man, so he tells her he has his companions' consent to retrieve the gold. To prove it, he brings her to the door, and shouts across his companions, saying, 'She will not give it to me unless you both tell her to do so!" The bathers shout back that she should give it to their companion, so the old woman fetches their gold, and he takes it and disappears. Eventually the two other companions, wondering what has taken so long, come to look for their partner. The old woman explains that she gave him their treasure, as they instructed, and the two are furious, crying that they had requested a comb, not their gold. They take her to the court, and present their case before a judge, who rules that the old woman must repay them as their wealth was lost through her carelessness. Crying, the old woman leaves the courthouse. She is approached by a five-year-old boy who asks why she is weeping, but she asks him to leave her alone and continues along the road. He follows, until she at last explains, and he tells her that if she will give him a coin to buy dates, he will tell her how to get out of her predicament. She agrees, so he then instructs her to return to the judge and tell him she still has the money, and that she will return it to the men - but only if they can bring their third companion there. If they cannot, she will not give them anything, as they instructed her not to hand over the gold to any but the three of them together. When the judge hears this, he rules in her favour, and immediately knows that she must have had advice; he begs to know who had the widom to give her such instructions. She explains that it was the young boy she met on the road. The boy is brought before the judge, who is so pleased with this wisdom and cleverness that he takes him under his wing.

A man makes his living telling fortunes, with answers supplied by a demon, or a witch, or a spirit. One day the magical being informs him that they must depart, and offers to tell him three magic spells - or the names of three divine/infernal powers - to thank him for his friendship. He can use these three spells, or three names, to grant wishes. The man is overjoyed, and rushes home to tell his wife. What should I wish for? he asks, and she replies that he should wish for ways to better pleasure women - or, that he should wish for more penises. As soon as his wish is stated, however, he finds himself covered with penises, and panics, crying out that he wishes they were gone. Once that wish has been said, the penises vanish - but so too does his original genitalia. Both husband and wife unhappily agree that final wish must therefore be the restoration of his original penis.

A prince visits the local bathhouse, and upon seeing his enormous size, and the way his genitals are hidden behind his belly, the bathhouse attendant weeps. The prince asks the reason for his tears, and the attendant explains that he believes the prince will be unable to have children because of his weight. The prince demands that the attendant bring him a woman to sleep with, whom he will pay 300 gold pieces. The attendant takes the gold, but calculates that the prince will be unable to have sex at all, so he decides to send his own wife to the prince and keep the gold for himself. He does so, and some time later, peeks through the window and is horrified to see his wife and the prince having sex. He begs for her to stop, and she asks, 'But isn't this what you wanted?' Shamed and upset, the bathhouse keeper leaves, and takes his own life (specifically, hangs himself, in some versions).
|Has Summary=This story takes place in a city that maintains a strict curfew, and anyone found in the streets after curfew is severely punished. In this city, a man keeps his wife under lock and key, but unbeknownst to him, she regularly sneaks out to meet a lover (in some versions, she accomplishes this by encouraging her husband to drink to excess nightly). One night, discovering her gone, the man locks the door, and refuses to open it for her when she returns and begs entry. She shouts through the door that she would rather drown herself than face public punishment, and then drops a large rock into the well. Hearing the splash and thinking she has thrown herself into the well, her husband rushes out; his wife slips into the house as he does so, and locks him out instead, refusing to let him in.
