The Hare

The gardener for Emperor Aurelianus raises a rabbit in a hutch within the emperor's gardens. One day, the rabbit escapes from the hutch, and quickly does great damage to the garden. Furious, the emperor has the gardener executed.

Note

Nishimura notes the relevant motif index code (TU2242: the Gardener of Emperor), and the parallels found in Kengu-kyo [The Wise and Foolish Sutra], 42 (a parrot damages a mango orchard).
