Spanish Version S: Diego de Cañizares, Scala Çeli
The translation of Juan (or Johannes) Gobi the Younger's Scala Celi into Spanish occurred some time late in the 15th century. The text survives in one manuscript, a miscellany of texts and letters dating from c. 1490-1500 (Cañizares Ferriz, 2011). The translator, Diego de Cañizares, credited his source in the opening of his text: "Nouella que Diego de Cañizares de latýn en rromançe declaró y trasladó de vn libro llamado Scala Çeli". The term novella is noteworthy, here; in the process of adaptation, Diego de Cañizares shifted the focus of the text away from the moralisations and theological argumentation that were central to the homiletic context of the Latin original. While the resulting text is still far from our expectations of a novella, given its form and relative brevity, the function - entertainment as much as instruction - implied by the term is instructive (see Cañizares Ferriz, 2011, p. 146).
Little is known about Diego de Cañizares himself. In addition to the translation of the Scala Celi, he is also credited as the translator of one other text, also found in the same surviving miscellany: a letter of consolation from Alfonso Carrillo, Archbishop of Toledo, to Diego Lópes de Madrid, Apostolic Protonotary and Bishop-elect of Sigüenza. According to Cañizares Ferriz (2011), the details of this letter, as well as the textual context of the broader manuscript, suggest that Diego de Cañizares was likely part of the Archibishop of Toledo's circle, and that he was actively translating sometime between 1468 and 1500. We can therefore date the composition of the Spanish Scala Çeli to around 1470-1500, likely in the region of Toledo.| General Information | |
