The so-called Y Group collects seven surviving manuscripts of individual verse Versions of the Middle English Version A. The earliest of them is the Auchinleck manuscript (ca. 1331-1340) and the latest contains date information from 1508-1536 (see Whitelock 2005: xxxiv, xxxvii). The designation is by Campbell who assumes that the manuscripts of this group all derive from the same (unknown) ME source: y (see Whitelock 2005: xxxix). Within these sub-groups some manuscripts derive from the same (unknown) source but never from one of the surviving manuscripts (see Whitelock 2005: xl-xli). They can be further divided into sub-groups: the Northern Version and the Southern Version.
