Excerpts in Gesta Romanorum

From The Seven Sages of Rome

The Historia and the Gesta Romanorum often appear together as separate texts in the same manuscript but there are also cases where excerpts from the Historia appear as a part of the Gesta Romanorum. Some parts of the frame narrative are being omitted and the stories as well as their spiritual interpretations are being shortened (see Roth 2004, p. 110). These excerpts can be found in three groups/branches of tradition of the Gesta Romanorum tradition: Continental Group x, Continental Group w, and the Insular Group u. Group w contains the most manuscripts: 124.

In some instances the manuscripts which contain Historia-Excerpts within the Gesta Romanorum also contain the Historia or another version of the Seven Sages as a separate text. This is mostly the case in manuscripts of the Continental Group w.
